General Education Curricula in
the Community College Sector
Comparison with GE Offered by UGC-funded Universities
Table 5 provides a comparison of the GE courses in major sub-degree providers with the GE
training offered by UGC-funded universities, in terms of the core-distribution model. Language
skills are important in major sub-degree providers and, in the distribution requirement,
GE courses are often offered in the three main domains of GE programmes in UGC-funded
universities:
(1) Arts and Humanities
(2) Social Sciences, Culture and Organization
(3) Science and Technology

In line with the growing trend of universities to adopt an inter disciplinary learning approach
in delivering GE education, there is also increasing emphasis on interdisciplinary learning in GE
courses of major sub-degree providers. For example, CIE offers inter-disciplinary GE courses
such as ‘Social Enterprise and Social Impact’ which covers both Business and Social Sciences
areas.
