Articulation and Recognition
(1) Articulation
With the rapid development of sub-degree programmes, mostly in the self-financing sector,
there is an increasing demand for further study opportunities (articulation) to undergraduate
programmes, whether UGC-funded or self-funded. For example, surveys of sub-degree
programme graduates of most community colleges in Hong Kong indicate that 80% or more
of them continue their studies.
In general, sub-degree programme graduates may continue their studies in several ways:
i. Senior-year intake places at UGC-funded universities, with application through the non-
JUPAS Admissions Scheme
ii. Self-funded top-up degree programmes offered by UGC-funded and self-financing
institutions
iii. Top-up degree programmes offered by overseas universities, with local or overseas
classes – major providers of sub-degree programmes have many partner universities,
mainly in English-speaking countries (Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United
Kingdom and the United States). Sub-degree programme graduates may complete the
top-up degree programmes in one to two years
In 2015/16, the number of senior year student intake of UGC-funded universities was 4,559
while self-funded top-up degree programme enrolment was 15,128 (refer to Table 1).
“Seamless” pathways are often offered by major providers of sub-degree programmes, for
example:
i. CIE Seamless 4-year Admission Scheme (SFAS): students under SFAS “would be given
direct articulation to the relevant UG Programme upon successful completion of the AD
Programme”. Applicants have to meet admission requirements of HKBU and under
go interview and selection process. (For more information, please refer to http://www.
cie.hkbu.edu.hk/mini/ seamless_articulation/2_2_Seamless_en.html)
ii. HKU SPACE CC Through-train Pre-enrolment Scheme: graduates will be automatically
admitted to partner universities in the United States, Australia and the United Kingdom,
subject to their CGPA, visa and other prescribed requirements. (For more information,
