Chapter Two
Common Core Requirements at the
UGC-funded Universities
Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU)
HKBU has established a General Education Office to provide administrative support to the
General Education Committee and academic departments, the GE course providers, in
overseeing and evaluating GE endeavours. In HKBU, the office is a supporting unit, guided by
the GE committee on matters of policy. Besides assisting faculty in submitting proposals for GE
courses, the office is also responsible for promoting GE teaching enhancement and recognition
(through awarding GE Teaching Awards and promoting good GE teaching practices).
Lingnan University (LU)
The Core Curriculum and General Education Office (CCGEO) is responsible for administering
GE courses in Lingnan University. Like many other universities, CCGEO liaises with other
academic departments in offering GE courses and, similarly, there is a Core Curriculum and
General Education Committee to deal with all matters related to General Education. Due to
the academic structure of the university, science-related majors are not offered in LU. Hence,
a separate unit has been established under the CCGEO to develop and teach science-related
GE courses for their undergraduate students. This unit functions like an academic department
that is directly responsible for delivering the science-related GE courses.
The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK)
In CUHK, General Education comprises University General Education (which includes a
compulsory General Education Foundation Programme and an elective distribution requirement)
and College General Education. The overall General Education provision is under the purview
of the Senate Committee on General Education (SCGE), a University-level committee. Course
assessment and grading of both the University General Education Programme and College
General Education Programme are monitored by the Assessment Panel on General Education
formed under SCGE. While each of the nine Colleges manages and operates its own College
General Education Programme through the College Assembly of Fellows and General Education
Committees, a separate office – the Office of University General Education – takes care of the
University General Education Programme and serves as the administrative arm of SCGE. The
roles of the Office of University General Education are two-fold: it coordinates the offering of
the University General Education courses under the distribution requirement model through
more than 40 academic departments/teaching units of the university; and, the Office also
has its own teaching staff to design, offer and monitor “In Dialogue with Humanity” and “In
Dialogue with Nature”, the two compulsory courses under the General Education Foundation
Programme.
