        Practices of General Education Courses

        (3) Integration
        i. Knowledge applications
The Knowledge Applications area prepares students to demonstrate how:
        • knowledge in a field outside of the student’s major can be evaluated and applied to solve
problems across a range of applications, and
        • knowledge of how the personal, professional, ethical, and societal implications can be
            applicable to themselves.
        ii. Capstone
The Capstone course prepares students to demonstrate:
        • appropriate uses of a variety of methods of inquiry and a recognition of ethical
considerations that arise from the ability to integrate the knowledge learned in General
Education and its relevance to the student’s life and career.
        iii. Writing intensive in major
iv. Writing intensive in general education
        v. U.S. diversity
It is noted that the GE curriculum in Oakland University is like the one in the Education
University of Hong Kong (EduHK), which is one of the few universities which require students
to undergo GE education in three stages, with a GE capstone project involved in the final stage.

Similarly, West Chester University also recognizes the AD qualification through a similar policy
called “Academic Passport”. The policy states that up to a maximum of 45 GE credits and liberal
arts course credits can be used to fulfil lower-division university GE requirements, even if the
receiving university does not offer the specific course being transferred or has not designated
that course as GE. Unlike the general block transfer policy in Hong Kong, the Academic
Passport policy not only exempts the need for individual course transfer, but universities have
an obligation to recognize an AD qualification automatically, as long as the AD programme
fulfils the requirement stated below. (This is different from how each university recognizes AD
        qualification individually):

“Pennsylvania community college students who have earned the associate of arts degree
(A.A.) or the associate of science (A.S.) degree in a transfer program containing a minimum
of 30 credits of liberal arts courses for the A.S. and 45 credits of liberal arts courses for the
A.A. degree with a 2.00 GPA or above are considered to have an Academic Passport. Students
completing 12 credits or more from another State System university with a minimum 2.00
GPA are said to have an Academic Passport as well. The transfer-credit provisions described
in the Academic Passport are extended to community college students without an associate
degree who transfer 12 or more credits to a State System institution. In addition, West Chester
