Chapter Four
Credit Transfer Practices for
Senior Year Admission
Over the past ten years, the eight UGC-funded institutions have developed more transparent
systems of disclosing GE credit transfer information which is normally accessible on their
websites. In particular, there are clear indications of the numbers of GE credits transferred and
further GE requirements for students of senior year entry (i.e. AD/HD graduates).
Good Practices of the Sub-degree Sector
During the interviews with GE heads of eight UGC-funded universities, advice has been
sought from them as to how the GE credit transfer from sub-degree to degree sector could be
facilitated. The following suggestions are some of the major ones received:
(1) Initiate and maintain an open dialogue between the two sectors to understand more
about the GE programme/course expectation and criteria stipulated by universities, especially
for those offering more senior year places. The eight universities normally will look to the
following parameters when assessing GE credit transfer applications:
i. Programme learning outcomes;
ii. Course learning outcomes;
iii. Teaching and assessment activities/methods;
iv. Contact hours;
v. Number of credits; and
vi. References.
(2) When designing GE courses, institutions in the sub-degree sector might usefully take
note of the GE course outlines developed by universities to ensure their transferability. In the
interests of students, the former institutions should try to speak to their counterparts in the
universities.
(3) Institutions in the sub-degree sector may consider inviting some universities to advise
them on the design of some specific GE courses for which they would like to secure credit
transferability.
