General Practice on Block Transfer System
There are clear indications of the numbers of GE credits required for students of senior
year entry (AD/HD graduates) before their admission. The information is usually accessible
to students and the public at the websites of those universities (Table 4). Currently, some
course mapping information is available from some universities such as U3, U4 and U6. These
mapped courses are mainly language or discipline courses. On the other hand, there is limited
room for applying GE credit transfer for individual GE courses under the block transfer system.

Under the block transfer system such as the ones operated by U3, U4 and U6, a sub-degree
applicant would normally be granted automatic transfer of certain number of GE credits. This
has substantially saved the effort and time of UGC admission personnel in going through each
credit transfer application. However, a student studying at one of the UGC-funded institutions
could still apply for credit transfer of relevant courses he or she had taken in categories
excluded from the block transfer. Additional unit transfer may be requested after the student
has officially registered as a student of that university. This kind of additional transfer shall be
made on a case-by-case basis. Having said that, we have not been informed at the interviews
with GE Heads that the granting of additional GE course exemption is a common practice,
unlike the cases for discipline-specific subjects.
